The Origin of the Jägermeister Toast and the Jäger Song by Pete Kerber |
|||
I wrote the lyrics in 1984 for the first reunion. There was only one verse for that reunion. I wrote the second verse in Colorado, I believe. The Jager tradition really started in Baumholder when Smack, Kolzing, Van Matthews and I moved a bar from one BOQ to another. I believe it was for Smack. We carried the bar down the stairs, then used Van's Jaguar XKE to help transport it to the new BOQ, then carried it to its final destination. We called it the "great bar movement". After finishing, one of them got out some Jägermeister and said we had to have a shot or 2. After that event, it seemed like I saw Jäger at different functions and parties, where it became a little more common. When we planned the first reunion in '84, Meg and I felt we needed to do some things that would remind our guests of Germany. We decided one of those things would be a shot of Jäger for the whole group. I thought we needed to do something more than have a spoken toast, so I made up the words, which actually came from some camp song a friend taught me. At the reunion, we gathered everyone, I taught them the words and the rest, as they say, is history. |
